Hi, I'm Laura
Though I've crafted and made art my entire life, it wasn't until reaching a difficult point in my journey with motherhood and PPD/PPA that I discovered my obsession with pottery. Making ceramics allows me to rebel against my inner critic and get to say "Yes!" to the things that bring me joy. My hope is that when others take in my work, they can see and feel the play involved in my process.
I'm so happy to share my work with you and hope that it inspires something in you.
I strive to make indulgent work that feels good in the moment, an act of rebellion against my self-critical nature. I often work through a process mindset. Creating a form is the beginning of a dialogue I have with the piece. I search for "problems" (i.e. visual weight) I'd like to exaggerate or balance, and begin to solve through addition or subtraction of clay, pattern, and color. From here I can "dress-up" my form further by highlighting particular elements, which may need their own responses in the moment or later through glazing. This playful process is represented in the nature of my gestural markmaking, addition of floral elements, squishy handbuilt feet, bright happy colors, and shiny bits of gold.
